Who: “My name is Marc Castan. Born in Narbonne, I
spent all my childhood in these Corbières
maritime between the passion of the sea and the earth.
As soon as I had my high school degree in my pocket, I decided to follow a
training in viticulture and pursued taking over the vineyard
from my grandfather.
My eyes were soon opened to the world of natural wine and the importance of the
winemaker. That’s how in 2009, I began to vinify my first cuvées …”
Where: The vineyard covers 14 hectares. It is located on the Audois coastline between the municipalities of La Palme and Leucate, 11480.
Vineyards: “We have rich soil which varies between pebbles rolled in edge of pond and
limestone cliff on the Mediterranean coast. Yields are relatively low (between 8hl / ha and 30hl / ha). 70% of the vines are grown in goblets, the others, on wires, in simple Guyot or cord of Royat.
Our grape variety is composed of Carignan black or white, Mourvèdre, Syrah,
Grenache black or gray, Macabeu, or Muscat Petit Grains.
Anxious to work “cleanly” and to offer the most natural wines possible, we work in
agroecology. Gentle work is required to bring the soil back to life and give way to biodiversity. For this, we implement hedges in vine border, we make our own home compost and we ensure the maintenance and cleaning of the plots by hand. Our treatments are made only with sulfur and plant decoctions as for example chamomile, nettle, dandelion, lavender or rosemary.
We have a healthy herd of Highland cattle + 2 donkeys that graze and naturally fertilize our soils.
Cellar: Vinification takes place naturally: no selected yeasts or inputs
oenological. Only certain cuvées see minimal sulfites before bottling.
Fun fact: The cuvée ‘Vin de Ma Cocotte’ rouge is a wink to Stéphanie, Marc’s friend. ‘Cocotte’ is an endearing term in French, similar to my dear, or my sweetie. It is Stéphanie’s favorite wine!
